Grandson of area residents leads flag campaign at new Ankeny school

Rick Primmer, a proud Vinton grandfather, shared with us the story of how his grandson Sam, a Boy Scout, led the campaign to have new flags placed in each of the classrooms of his new school in Ankeny. Rick hopes that a similar effort will take place in Vinton. "Our Grandson, Sam, undertook this project after the new school opened up in Ankeny.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 19 Corps Member Spotlight: Nicholas King

Nicholas King, from Antelope, Calif., is a member of Oak 3 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Oak 3 is made up of nine people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

Greenhand Fire Up: Deion Dulin and Shania Heckman plan a communication activity Greenhand Fire Up On October 9, 2013 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter had nineteen members attend the annual district Greenhand Fire Up at Wapsie Valley High School. The word “Greenhand” stands for first year member in FFA, though the Fire Up is not restricted to only first years. While you are there you are divided into groups based on numbers on your name tag.

NCCC Cedar 4 helps with Colorado flood relief efforts

By Samantha Janda, Cedar 4 The AmeriCorps NCCC team of, Cedar 4, was called upon to assist with disaster relief efforts for flooding in Colorado, and departed from Vinton, Iowa on September 23. They are serving with the Jewish disaster relief organization NECHAMA near the Boulder area of Colorado. Cedar 4 has been very busy ever since their arrival.

Where are they now? How being a sports anchor is Brett Edwards' second choice

Brett Edwards: Former Viking and 2001 VS grad is now sports anchor at KLKN-TV in Lincoln, Neb. Brett Edwards has sat face-to-face with NBA legend Bill Walton. He gets paid to travel all over the country, covering his favorite college football team. He has seen some of the most famous football venues in the country. Yet, he says, there is one job he would rather do than the one he is doing now. Edwards, the son of Jeff and Sue Edwards of Vinton, graduated from Vinton-Shellsburg in 2001.

Aaron Sackett among Wartburg Homecoming King candidates

Aaron Sackett; CPU Homecoming King is now candidate for Wartburg King. The 2010 Center Point-Urbana Homecoming King is now among the candidates for that honor at Wartburg. Aaron Sackett, the son of Chris and Rose Sackett of Center Point, is a biology major at Wartburg. 4th Street Diner News and Oct. schedule

The 4th Street Diner meal on Sunday, October 13th will be Baked Chicken, Mashed Potatoes/Gravy, Corn, Mandarin Oranges, Cake, WW Bread, Milk.   On Monday, August 12th, there were five tables of Pepper Cards were played.  First place went to Patti McKenna with 271 points.  Darlene Werning won 2ndplace with 234 points.
